Not long ago, Pete Barnato, the lead singer for Moondog Matinee, and I started talking about updating their press kit photography and making some strong artistic images of the band that represents them. If you are not familiar with Moondog Matinee they are an incredible live performance band that will rock your soul with their captivating stage presence and original sound. Recently the band got the incredible opportunity to be featured by Red Bull and the Life Is Beautiful Festival on the Red Bull Sound Select stage in Las Vegas, NV for the festival’s inaugural weekend. From LifeisBeautifulfestival.com: “MOONDOG MATINEE EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF THE LIVE PERFORMANCE, BLENDING OLD-SCHOOL BLUES AND PROGRESSIVE ROCK & ROLL WITH EXPERIMENTAL OPENNESS THAT TRANSCENDS MUSICAL GENRES. MOONDOG MATINEE HAS ACCOMPANIED COUNTLESS BANDS ON STAGE RANGING FROM GIRLS, BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE, AND DEER TICK TO UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA, HOWLIN’ RAIN, AND STEELWELLS. MANIFESTING A STYLE OF PURE CREATIVE AND ORIGINAL SOUNDS, MOONDOG MATINEE REMINDS THEIR AUDIENCES OF WHY GRASSROOTS ROCK & ROLL WILL NEVER FADE. THEIR DEBUT ALBUM VACANCY AT THE WONDER LODGE WAS ENTIRELY RECORDED, ENGINEERED, AND MASTERED BY TOM GORDON, THE MAN BEHIND THE BOARDS FOR ACTS SUCH AS BEACH BOYS, WILLIE NELSON, AND DR. DRE.” More on Life is Beautiful, the band’s performance, and my role as the Reno Photographer that captured it all in a minute.
So as you can imagine I took the honor of being able to photograph this incredible group of artists very seriously. We met up at Moondog’s studio and as I always do when first on a location I started scouting several areas outside the studio that I found interesting. Here are some of the photos from our shoot and Moondog Matinee’s new band press kit photography.
Back to the Life Is Beautiful Festival! If you’re not familiar with the festival here is a little info. Life is Beautiful Festival is a two day festival featuring music, food, and art. Some of the bands that headlined the festival included The Killers, Vampire Weekend, Kings of Leon, Beck, Imagine Dragons, Pretty Lights, Empire of the Sun, Passion Pit, Alabama Shakes, Moondog Matinee, and many more.
Some of the headlining chefs that brought delicious culinary treats for the senses were Bruce and Eric Bromberg, Jonathan Wasman, Hubert Keller, Aaron Sanchez, Cat cora, Rick Moonen, Scott Conant, Tom Colicchio, and Michael Symon.
Last, but definitely not least, the festival featured interactive art programming with theatrical, visual, and street art projects. Some of the headlining performances artists included “Cirque du Soleil, Absinthe, Human Nature, Jabbawockeez, Million Dollar Quartet, Recycled Percussion, and Rock of Ages.” What I found to be the most original aspect about this festival compared to other festivals I had attended was the addition of the “Rise Above: A Street Art Program” where some of the most famous names in street art “Vhils, D*Face, Alexis Diaz, Interesni Kazki, Zio Ziegler, Ana Maria, and Aware” created beautiful murals on the buildings which have now become permanent street art; changing the look and feel of downtown Las Vegas for future generations.
Watching Moondog Matinee have their moment onstage at the festival was so exciting and rewarding because not only are the members of the band (Peter, Dre, Adam, Ben, Steve) talented musicians, they’re also good people who are working hard each and every day to make their dreams come true. The crowd was going wild as the band killed it from every aspect; incredible instrumentals, perfect harmonies, and an energy during their performance that rivaled all of the other headliners. It was a pleasure to share this moment with these talented musicians and their thousands of new fans, as well as be able to capture these images.
